Description

In the early 1950's, polio--also called "infantile paralysis"--was epidemic in Dallas and the rest of the USA. The disease paralyzed muscles, including those controlling breathing. Some patients required a mechanical ventilator or "iron lung." This photo of a girl in an iron lung in Parkland Hospital is labeled "16th Birthday."
